Awesome ogre, stupid axe. A larger yet slimmer weapon would be scarier and reenforce the creature. I think this oversized axe cartoonizes it...

You say that, but a large being wielding a large weapon is intimidating. I'm not sure how or why you claim a weapon made for the size of its wielder cartoonizes it.

An ogre magi is an oni, it isn't the same creature. Distant relation, at best (arguable, depending on source/edition/etc.). Love this picture, while I found the oni a bit cartoonish.

Now this is definitely an ogre. Though, it is interesting to see such an extremely different depiction between this and the mage. I know the mage would be more intelligent, but it's appearance (at least anatomy) wouldn't change that much.

The ogre mage isn't just an ogre who is a mage. They're a different creature entirely.

Oh, I guess I never realized that. Still seems a bit dramatic of an anatomy/style change. As someone said on the mage's image, it looks more like an eastern creature or oni.

That's because the ogre mage IS an Oni. It has always been, since Gygax made it.

Didn't know that. The most commonly played system, 3.5, doesn't mention that. Is it in some of the older books?

It's so since first edition. This is the picture of Ogre Mage in AD&D 2e Monster compendium:

If you check Pathfinder version, it's dressed as a samurai: [link] Even 3rd edition is a blue ogre with small horns (like the oni we see here), and the same powers than this kind of oni has. The only difference is that the sword is european.
