Owlbear (version 2) concept art for The Forgotten Realms (Dungeons & Dragons).

This was a rejected version (ultimately), but one of my personal favorite, as it explored a more morbid-like approach to the "beak" (lol), with the exposed skeletal area of the mouth. Seemed a bit more savage and scary, but may have strayed to far from the classic look to be totally accepted by D&D fans.

The final version approved is featured in the "Forgotten Realms: Monster" piece posted earlier, featuring several different types of monsters you'll encounter. That owlbear has the more wide-eyed look to make it look a bit more sinister.

I love the coherence of the design. It looks like a real creature which could be described as both owl-like and bear-like, instead of a chimeric mishmash based on the name alone.

the "beak" is more frightening, but less natural.
There are many sinister creatures in the bestiary. An owlbear should scare like an hungry bear, not like an evil creature

That is bad ass! This it what we, DM's, tried to get into the players mind when they encountered them. That would really scare a player now!

i really like this concept, except the skin pulled back at the mouth. just that little piece. the mouth/nose are is great, just needs skin. and honestly, the only reason i don't like the skinless part, is because another beast does the same thing. the krenshar. otherwise, i would be woohoo! wicked cool! :)
just sayin'-- from one of the longer time fans of the game

Baddass! Sad that it didn't make throught, the skull-beak is a brilliant idea!

This is one of the best owlbear pics I have seen. I would use this for an arctic owlbear.

It is cool looking, but I'd agree it does stray away from the true animal nature of the Owlbear.
